The Farmer’s Almanac tells us that the fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.
According to the Wise Witches Society, this moon is referred to as the Barley Moon. “Persephone, virgin Goddess of rebirth, carries a sheaf of barley as a symbol of the harvest.”
August’s Moon is also known as Corn Moon, Harvest Moon, and Barley Moon. This moon marks the beginning of the corn harvest and of drying herbs. This is the time for celebration with people who are close to you. The zodiac association is Leo.” [1]

I’ve known this one through the years as the green corn and grain moon, but also as the spider moon. August and September are “spider season” where I live because it is around this time every year that a migratory species of orb spinner moves through the area. They average about the size of a quarter and need spaces roughly three feet by three feet, preferably four to eight feet above the ground to build their large orb-type webs. Of course, this means that doorways and walkways are their favorite places to build. They have nasty, nasty bites. Last night while doing rounds of buildings I counted almost two dozen that I had to knock down to pass by- and the season has barely started. It has been so warm (and there was no hard freeze last winter) so the spider numbers are ridiculous already.
This is hands down my least favorite time of year.
Oh believe me, I can understand why! Yikes!!!
Unfortunately you omitted WHERE you are, necessary for the big picture
of whats goin’ on in the good ole USofA…
Thank you for this post!
I have to ask, WHERE did you find that beautiful image, of the girl picking flowers under the moon?
Thank you and Blessed Be,

Hi Annette! I found it on this site (http://astrologymonami.com/2012/04/) I try to always find the name of the artwork and artist when I use them, but was unable to find the artist for this piece. I do however provide a link to where I found the image for every image I use. If you click on any of the images, you’ll be directed to where I obtained it from or to the site of the artist who did the work.
Thanks and Bright Blessings! 🙂
UPDATE: A little further digging just revealed that this piece is entitled “Persephone” by Kris Waldherr according to http://thepaganandthepen.wordpress.com/2010/09/04/persephone-garden-planning/.
Thanks and Bright Blessings!
Reblogged this on Journeying to the Goddess and commented:
This Full Moon happens to be a Blue Moon. According to Sarah Varcas, “An astrological Blue Moon is a rare thing and something to be noted. It occurs when the Moon is full twice in a solar month, giving us two successive Full Moons in the same zodiac sign. The second of those Moons is a Blue Moon. The next such moon isn’t until June 2016…”
